Membership confirms to God that you take his word seriously.
Membership is not explicit in Scripture – but there are enough clues to show that there should be clear administration of who is/isn’t part of a local church (e.g. Acts 2:41, 47; 1 Cor 5:2, 5; 1 Tim 5:3ff). By becoming a member you are demonstrating obedience to God’s Word.
Membership confirms to yourself that you are at home.
Becoming a member of a local church is like adoption into a family. It gives you a place of belonging. It reminds you that Parkstone Church is your home. You are not a nomad or wanderer – but part of a family.
Membership confirms to the rest of the church that you are with them.
Becoming a member shows that you love the rest of the church. It shows that you are here to stay. It shows that you are committed to their gospel growth and maturity in Christ as well as your own. It confirms that you are a servant of others and not just yourself.
Membership confirms to the leaders that you part of their flock.
God has entrusted the care of his people to the elders of local churches. Becoming a Member confirms to the leaders of a church that you are part of their flock, under their authority and inline with their vision and mission (thus making their job a joy, see Hebrews 13:17)
Membership confirms to the world that you a Christian.
The four things above all work together to make up God’s design for making disciples of all nations. Membership is a demonstration to the world that your closest ties are not to this world – but to Christ and his church. Through a committed community of disciples who love and care for each other (John 13:35) the gospel is demonstrated and declared (e.g. Matthew 5:16; 1 Peter 2:11-12).
